The third annual HAGI VCCM Conference South Africa takes place between the Knysna Motor Show held on April 28, and the Jaguar Simola Knysna Hillclimb, which starts on May 2 and runs through to May 5.
- The VCCM Conference is being held on April 30 and May 1, 2019 at a magnificent venue overlooking the Knysna lagoon.
The hosting of the third annual Value in the Classic Car Market Conference at Villa Castollini in Knysna has been hailed as a masterstroke by both the organisers of the Knysna Motor Show and the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb.
These two “must-see” motoring events take place one week apart, and the conference for collectors of classic cars and collectable assets, to be held on April 30 and May 1, 2019, gives an added reason for classic and performance car enthusiasts from all over South Africa to create an action-filled “speed week” in the otherwise sleepy town of Knysna, during this fine-weather period.
‘We are hugely grateful to both the Knysna Motor Show and the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb for their support in hosting VCCM in such a perfect setting,” said Tommy Roes, Organiser of the HAGI VCCM Conference.
“As for content in our conference, our line-up of presentations for 2019 in Knysna is far and away the most exciting we have had to date!”
Focus on ownership and asset appreciation
In 2019 the VCCM conference will focus on the ownership aspects of rare and collectable motorcars, while still recognising their status as appreciating assets of passion.
Topics will include the current market situation, restorations, valuations, insurance, trust and estate planning for collectables and local success stories, amongst others.
The broader spectrum of collectable assets
“In 2018, we introduced discussions around collectable assets of passion in general,“ says Roes. These included presentations from ITOO Classics, specialist insurers of art and collectables, fine art auctioneers Strauss & Co as well as a presentation from whisky experts Whisky Brother as whisky establishes itself more and more as a formidable collectable asset.
“A presentation from Knight Frank beautifully summarised the market for collectable assets by sharing the latest results of their Luxury Investment Index, the KFLII which compares the performance of 10 collectable asset categories including classic cars, wine, art, watches, coins, stamps and the like.
“These conversations were incredibly well received,” concluded Roes, “and we plan to expand on these subjects in more detail at the 2019 event while featuring Vintage Motorcycles, Wine, Watches, Coin and Stamps more prominently into the line-up.”
The 2019 VCCM Line-Up includes:
- Marque presentations. These will centre on the rewards and challenges of owning specific classic makes. This year the focus will be on BMW, Harley-Davidson and Mini, which incidentally celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
- Jimmy Price of Hi-Tech Automotive. This remarkable businessman and classic enthusiast from Port Elizabeth has built sports cars such as the Noble, Cobra, Corvette Grand Sport, Daytona Coupe and Ford GT40 to standard-bearer levels on a global level! Jimmy will share his inspirational story, overcoming adversity and finding international success from a South African base, and will hopefully share developments and progress on the latest GT40 continuation program.
- World War II Spitfire restoration. There will be a special presentation from Ian Grace, project director for the SAAF Museum Spitfire Restoration Project. Ian will shine a light on a monumental project to restore one of only four Supermarine Spitfire’s on the African continent (one of two in South Africa) back to flying condition after it was wrecked in a non-fatal crash in 2000.
This project, which is sorely in need of funding, relies mostly on fundraising efforts from volunteers and donations from the private sector. An exceptional effort will be required to restore, protect and preserve this critical part of our aviation heritage and the VCCM aims to help raise awareness for the project. - The history of the DJ motorcycle run. A time-line on this remarkable annual event commemorating the annual Durban to Jo’burg race for motorcycles built prior to 1936. Riding an 80 or 90-year-old motorcycle with no suspension and little in the way of brakes for two days is no joke!
- Import and export considerations for classics. James Xulu from Transglobal Logistics will once again unpack this hot topic and give the latest updates regarding legislation.
- The Jaguar Simola Hillclimb. Otherwise known as “the Knysna Hillclimb!” Organiser and ex-motoring scribe and racer Ian Shrosbree will talk about this amazing event, now celebrating its 10th anniversary. Many consider this to be the premier motorsport event on the annual calendar.
- Sabrina Love Foundation. This is the nominated charity of VCCM 2019. The Sabrina Love Foundation is the nominated charity of VCCM. This supports a campaign for nurturing early childhood development in underprivileged communities on the Garden Route.
Knysna a natural fit for VCCM
After the first two VCCM Conferences were held in the Gauteng area, Tommy Roes, who is also the Managing Director of TCF South Africa, an international classic vehicle sourcing company, says that the VCCM Conference has “found its natural home.” The following tributes to the conference have been received by influential players in both the classic car fraternity and asset management experts:
Leon Strümpher (Portfolio Manager, Sanlam Private Wealth):
“Tommy Roes and his team have created something very special and niche in the South African collectable cars and luxury goods arena. The VCCM conference fits the profile we would like to associate ourselves with.
The conference brings together like minded individuals with world class content in a wonderful setting.
We are encouraged by the long-term potential of the VCCM conference and hope to be a partner for the foreseeable future. The new home for the VCCM conference seems to be a perfect fit, complimenting two motoring events, the Knysna Motor Show and the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb which are both highly thought of in motoring circles. With this addition to the speed week we think this could become a true motoring experience for the avid collector and classic car enthusiast.”
Peter Pretorius (Chairman, Garden Route Motor Club and Organiser, Knysna Motor Show):
“The vision of the Garden Route Motor Club has always been to fill the gap during the week between the Knysna Motor Show and the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb and to create a full week of motoring extravaganza.
Having experienced first-hand the quality and content of the presentations delivered at the VCCM seminars, it is a perfect fit as well as drawing a similar audience. With the Garden Route becoming the mecca of classic cars and motorcycles, Knysna is ideally placed for VCCM to stage a conference here. The Knysna Motor Show is thus supporting VCCM to build on this opportunity where two major events are staged over separate weekends “.
Ian Shrosbree, Organiser of the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb:
“Over the years we have had a number of proposals to add events but we have not necessarily felt that they were a good match for various reasons.
The VCCM covers cars and lifestyle, which is a perfect fit for us, and it slots seamlessly into the days between the Motor Show and Hillclimb giving visitors a meaningful reason to stay in Knysna, or to come early, to attend the week’s activities.”
VCCM 2019 will be a relaxing 2-day conference, held at the breath-taking Villa Castollini overlooking Knysna, allowing plenty of time to socialise and network with people of similar passion and interests.
