2021 SHC King of the Hill – Qualifying 4

The King of the Hill competitors are on it this morning, with Andre Bezuidenhout setting his first official qualifying time of the day at 35.589 seconds in Q4 – just 0.061 sec off his current official record in the Gould GR55, and 0.14 off his fastest time from yesterday.

Wade van Zummeren is on a charge in the wild GT-R, setting his and the car’s fastest-ever time on the 1.9 km Simola Hill, stopping the clock at 39.846 seconds. “I had a great start and run up the hill, but a welch plug came out the front of the cylinder head causing a water leak,” he said. “We’re going to try fix it now before the next run.”

Dawie Joubert has also made his intentions clear with his quickest run yet in the Ferrari 488 twin-turbo-engined Lotus of 40.430 seconds. The two Formula VW entries were next up, with Byron Mitchell posting a time of 40.461 seconds, 0.153 sec ahead of Andrew Rackstraw.

Wilhelm Baard was 0.6 sec slower than his prior run at 40.752 seconds, ahead of Devin Robertson (41.023 sec), Franco Scribante (41.078 sec), Charl Arangies (41.215 sec) and Pieter Zeelie (41.651 sec).

“The track limit markers have made a big difference to the Simola Hill this year,” Scribante said. “Through the Esses you used to be able to straightline the corners to an extent, but it’s no longer possible as you have to take much wider lines to avoid having your time deleted. So this will definitely impact our times this year, especially with my car which is so wide.”
